Careers in Lab Technology

Did you take the premed track in college? Now that you've graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree, are you sure you want to go back to school and spend another six to eight years studying to become a doctor? Becoming a doctor can comprise a big chunk of your life, and if you're not passionate about the idea, your decision to go back to school could make you miserable for a long time.

If you don't want to go back to school, what are you going to do with your BS degree? A very popular option for people who gained a reasonable amount of lab experience in college is to find careers in lab technology. Most lab technologists are required to hold BS degrees in one of the life sciences, and there are countless numbers of job opportunities in the field.

If you haven't earned your BS degree yet, but are interested in a lab technology career, you may want to consider becoming a lab technician. Lab technicians are generally required to earn an associate's degree in lab technology, requiring approximately two years instead of the four it usually takes to earn a bachelor's.

Lab technologists and technicians are responsible for carrying out tests that help detect, diagnose, and treat disease. After analyzing test results, lab technologists and technicians relay their findings to doctors. The level of analysis and personal responsibility are the main factors deciding whether lab technologists and technicians are capable of running certain tests.
